Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Anaesthetist with associated interest in pain management to join our Department. We welcome applications from clinicians who are seeking a new challenge and have experience in the provision of pain services both acute and persistent. You will be vocationally registered and hold the F.A.N.Z.C.A., equivalent or eligible.
You will be responsible for the provision of efficient, safe and appropriate anaesthetic services, pain management and overnight ICU cover to the community of Taranaki. Experience across the whole range of anaesthetic specialties is ideal. Members of the department have rostered sessions for chronic and acute pain, pre anaesthetic clinics, ongoing education and administration. Regular departmental meetings are rostered within normal working hours to maintain a high standard of practice. There is a monthly CPD meeting with a regular M&M component usually held after hours. The ICU also runs separate CPD meetings which are open to a wider clinical audience.
The range of work transacted is quite wide but excludes Neuro, Cardiothoracic and Neonatal/complex Paediatric surgery. There are 6 General Surgeons, 3 ENT, 3 Ophthalmologists, Maxillo-facial, 5 Obstetricians/Gynaecologists, 7 Orthopaedic Surgeons, 1 Urologist and 1 Vascular surgeon. Supporting facilities are good with CT/MRI and a new interventional radiology suite. There is an in-house laboratory and pathology service, a cardiology suite and a dialysis unit.
Base Hospital undertook a new build in 2013 and commissioned 6 new Operating Theatres, 2 Endoscopy/Procedure suites, a 12 Bedded PACU1 and 24 Bed PACU 2 in the theatre complex. New acute care wing is being developed currently. The Anaesthetic service is supported by a full complement of Anaesthetic Technicians who assist at all anaesthetics. The pain service is multidisciplinary and runs outpatient clinics, inpatient assessments, CBT based Pain Management Programmes and community educational services. The successful candidate will take part in an on call rota with Registrar support.
Taranaki is situated on the west coast of the lower North Island of New Zealand with a population of approximately 120,000. It is an area with outstanding scenery and a desirable place to live. It is also an affordable place to live and raise a family, with first class educational facilities. The mountain to surf environment encourages outdoor living and recreational activities which are all available within minutes of New Plymouth, the provincial capital.
