Internships are a valuable way of ensuring that students are exposed to the health sector in a safe and supportive way. They provide an arena for students to develop skills in a work placement situation and integrate knowledge and skills with well supervised practice experience.

Good opportunities for internships and well supervised learning require that there be a high level of co-operation and collaboration between WhyOra and the host agencies that offer internships throughout Taranaki.To be eligible for an internship you must be a Tertiary student studying a Health and Disability degree.

"I'm doing a Bachelor of Science. I want to end up working in health, but I'm still figuring that out. It's been a good opportunity to work with the Health Protection Unit."Natasha Stanton has spent her summer break on a WhyOra Internship with the Health Protection Unit.

Stanton, 19, who is Nga Rauru, has been has been travelling throughout the region visiting popular recreational water sites reviewing the effectiveness of health warning signs and looking at whether the signs were identifiable and easy to understand from the public's perspective.

"Maori have a connection to water, particularly as a symbol of health and wellbeing, so it's really great to have the opportunity to influence the way that connection is considered within public health policies and guidelines."

This project aims to increase the workforce capacity of the Māori health workforce within the Taranaki region by supporting the transition of Māori into the health sector. Cadetships provide paid employment opportunities for up to 12 months within various roles of the health and disability sector.

Whina Waiariki participated on a 12 month WhyOra cadetship splitting her time between Hawera Community Dental Unit and Ngati Ruanui Healthcare. Whina first become involved with the WhyOra secondary school “Health as a career programme,” as a school student and completed her cadetship in 2015. Whina now has full time permanent employment with Taranaki District Healthboard as a chairside assistant.

“I was a part of the WhyOra programme for about three years at high school and was told about the dental therapy cadetship through the programme,”. The cadetship is such a great opportunity and I have already gained many new skills and learnt a lot about different roles in the health sector,”.
